Monitoring Your Baby? Find the Best Baby Monitor
As a parent, we were concerned that we couldn't hear the baby crying when we were in the basement and the baby was upstairs in her bedroom. We didn't want to go outside and work in the garden incase she started crying and we couldn't hear her, and it was completely out of the question to visit a neibghor while the baby was asleep. I can just imagine the scaring on the baby's little pyche waking up and coming out of her room and finding her self all alone.
The good news is there are numerous products that will let you see your baby wakeup, that send texts when they detect motion in the baby's room to just about any need. It's important to find the best baby monitor for your needs. Whether it's finding a long range baby monitor so you can go outside while your baby is sleeping, or finding the perfect video baby monitor so you can watch your baby breath while it's sleeping, getting the right monitor will provide comfort and convenience to you.
Don't be alarmed if you feel a bit overwhelmed when you start your search for the best baby monitor for you. There are lots of products and options, but nothing is more important than your baby's well-being. For example, you may see a recommendation of combining a Dex bed rail system for a toddler or a deluxe Stokke Sleepi oval crib for an infant with a bebesounds monitoring system. These may be very safe products, but you'll have to research each one and how they work together to determine if they are right for you.
Baby Monitor Basics
Standard baby monitors come in three varieties or a combination of the three. Plugged-in monitors, mobile monitors with rechargable batteries, and video baby monitors. If you want to walk around the house and be able to hear the baby through the monitor, then we suggest a mobile monitor that comes with rechargable batteries. The small size makes it portable. If it's also important to see the baby while you walk around the house or go outside, then you'll want a mobile video baby monitor with an LCD screen. LCD screens are lighter and easier to carry around the house. It's important to think how you will use the device in your home before purchasing.

Best Wireless Baby Monitors
The 900 MHz baby monitor and the 2.4 GHz baby monitor is the best wireless choice for two reasons. With these monitors there will be less interference and longer range capabilities. Long range wireless baby monitors provide convenience especially in large homes. Fisher Price Baby Monitors are some of the best. The Sounds n Lights Monitor will display lights based on the baby sounds. The 2.4 GHz wireless monitor will let you hear the baby up to 1500 feet away. With all wireless baby monitors, you may run into some interference issues with your phone system, or wifi. Boing, Boing recommends a specific baby monitor frequency to limit interference. Also, if your house isn't wrapped in aluminum, your signal can be easily picked up with a radio scanner. So you might want to turn it off, when you are not using it.

Wifi Baby Monitor
As a bit of a geek, I was like why don't we make a wifi baby monitor by hooking up a wireless video camera that connects to our wifi network. This can be done with most computer cameras, although you won't find them advertised as baby monitors. The best wifi baby monitor for this is the Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Video Camera. It's more of a surveillance camera, and it could even be useful for spying on the baby sitter or nanny. I think there have actually been a few stories about this type of thing.
Baby Monitor Apps
Yep, there's an iPhone app for baby monitors. Touted as a travel baby monitor or a baby monitor with unlimited range it works by turning on the app and leaving the iPhone in the baby's room. It detects sound and will place a call or text message so you can listen in. The reviews have been pretty good, but it's been pointed out that the application can be pretty sensitive to noise that triggers several calls or text messages. I personally really like the idea of this application, especially for older kids (3+ years old) where we put the baby to sleep, but may find ourselves out of range from the wifi monitor. This seems like the modern day replacement to calling a house and having two phones on speaker phone so a parent can listen in.

Other Uses for Wireless Baby Monitors, Video Monitors and Wifi Baby Monitors
Some times your baby may want to watch you and by reversing the wireless baby monitor or the wifi video baby monitor, your child can listen to your voice and see you.
Some children have separation anxiety, even when you are home. Especially for mothers, it can be difficult to set the baby down. You can use two baby monitors or a two way monitor to talk to your child as you move about the house. One will keep an eye on them, and the other will let them listen or watch you. Some children are soothed by the the voice of a parent, and others are content to just see their mothers on the video screen.
Mothers report success by placing video baby monitors in cribs so children that don't want to sleep alone are comforted and using audio infant monitors to sing their babies to sleep, so the child doesn't wake up when they leave the room.
Infants need to lie down in the stroller since they aren't strong enough to hold their head up. While you don't need an expensive Bugaboo or Bill and Teds jogger, you can attach a a monitoring device to the stroller and watch your baby as you walk. This is only helpful if you can't see the baby in the stroller. Some double strollers have room for an infant to slide under the front seat. In this case, it can make sense to go with a Kidco device and watch your infant as you stroll. Similarly, a monitor or mirror can be used in a Perego infant car seat since the child is facing backwards as you drive.
If you decide to go with Bumkin cloth diapers, one of the challenges is monitoring how wet the baby is. Since this isn't visible with monitoring solutions or a typical feature of monitoring devices, it's best to check the baby often. Or to try a more absorbent diaper in the evening and night if you're concerned about waking the infant.
I saw a request to monitor a baby in a Bjorn. This seems like a bit of overkill since it is attached to you. In this case, just check to make sure the baby is breathing or a comfortable temperature.
My Notes on Baby Monitors
As I was putting this together, I took notes from several sites and I thought I'd share that with you.
Baby Call Monitors are very popular, but I was a little confused by the name of the product. It looks like it's made by Sony and it's just a standard monitor, but I wasn't sure if you were able to talk back to the child through the monitor. I don't think you can. What I did like about this monitor is the water resistant receiver and the belt clip. I always feel like we misplace the monitor and it would be great to just clip it on.
Almost all portable baby monitors come with rechargeable batteries, but not all models have replaceable batteries. This wasn't that important to me, but you may want to check because it can be annoying to have a rechargeable device that won't recharge:)
Baby monitors movement with lights or video. I'm a bigger fan of the video, especially if the baby can't get out of the way of the camera.
Also, since we are interested in baby monitors, there are other classes. There are baby breathing monitors, baby heartbeat monitors, and baby temperature monitors.
Infant breathing monitors can be useful for premature babies, but there is little evidence that they reduce SIDS. The article suggests that the false alarms may produce more anxiety than good.
Baby heart monitors or infant heartbeat monitors are designed to be used in the home like the Doppler they use in your doctor's office to check the baby before it's born. The fetal Doppler appears to be a specialty device that is very expensive. It seems like a doctor would suggest if this device is a good idea for you. If you're concerned, ask your doctor.
Baby temperature monitor or the infant remote fever monitor is a device that clips on to the baby's diaper that allows for a child's temperature to be taken remotely. It can be an effective device for a sick child that needs sleep, where the monitor will signal an alarm if the baby's temperature passes a threshold.
How do Baby Monitors Work?
Like a radio station, baby monitors transmit a signal at a fixed frequency. Early versions worked in the 49-50 MHz and some had an A/B switch so you could try one of two channels. If one was getting interference, just flip the switch. Baby monitors are not secure and nieghbors have been know to pick up signals. Also, you may notice your reciever picking up strange things. One person was actually picking up signals from NASA. If you want to hunt for signals in your area, pick up a radio scanner and check the 49-50 range.
Baby Monitor Feedback
There are a lot of new products available now in the market, a bit confusing when you have also to consider the price and how long do you need these things. I wonder if you have to use rechargeble batteries or just the normal one.... Nice review Paul....
Regards, MM
Paul,
I am looking forward to watching this unfold. Fantastic idea. Congrats, daddy!

Great hub, Paul! It will be interesting to see how this experiment goes. You know what might make an interesting related hub is something on the ethics and legal ramifications of "spying on the babysitter". You do hear about it in the press sometime and I've always wondered how legal it is to spy if the babysitter is unaware of the monitoring, even in your own home.
I'm not going to go into too much detail on this, but I believe you are free to monitor anything you want in your own home. I think I'd let a baby sitter know that the house had video monitors.
However, if I had any concern that the baby sitter was harming my children, I wouldn't rely on a hidden camera to video the interactions, I just wouldn't hire the baby sitter.
Paul
Thank you very much for your great information. I never used video monitor for my kids. I wish I did. It would have saved me hours of sleep!
The technology changes and there are so much more available today than it was 7 years ago!
Love for you to be my fan! Have an amazing day!

I'd like to add my two cents worth to what you said. You wrote:
"Also, if your house isn't wrapped in aluminum, your signal can be easily picked up with a radio scanner."
I'd like to add that a friend was babysitting and she had a wireless video monitor for the newborn. She went around the house doing other things and when she returned she looked at the wireless monitor- she couldn't recognize the room. Oh and the baby was gone! So she ran upstairs and found the baby to be OK, but it turns out she was picking up the "signal" of another wireless video monitor user- that of a neighbor.
So I don't want to add paranoia to anyone's life, but I wouldn't get a wireless video baby monitor simply because some creep could be watching the baby using the same frequency. Worse yet, they could watch YOU in the room and wait until you're gone before sneeking in.
I was at the baby store and asked if they ever heard funny stories of how people use their baby montitors. It turns out, that it's pretty common to buy a baby monitor to watch a pet. I guess that makes sense, but seems a little over the top to me.
This sounds to be good and quiet interesting about this product.whereas it should be look over on expensiveness also with comparing other products.
I love having a baby monitor, it makes me feel much better about my baby sleeping and makes you feel much more comfortable being able to hear them at all times!
Just checked out this hub to learn from how you do it! Got some great ideas. Thanks for being so helpful and open about how to make high quality hubs!

There is a solution. I bought a Y-Cam Knight SD from WiFi Baby which streams HD video/audio to my Mac and iPhone. It's completely secure with a username and password. I can watch my son from work, downstairs on my computer when he's on the 3rd floor etc. Easy to set up, completely secure and the picture and audio is incredible.
I am a soon-to-be dad looking for a way to keep an eye on my new baby while I'm at work (or ideally anywhere via my Android smartphone via browser or app). Is there a device that is portable, rechargeable, and sends A/V signal through a wifi link that my wife or parents could set in front of the baby and I could then connect with? Thanks! Kevin kevatasu@yahoo.com
Can't argue with success. Looking for one of these while I work.
I like the IP Camera solution because I can stream to my Android phone, that way if I'm home alone with the newborn, I can make a kwik beer run (only 5 minutes, I promise) and be alerted if the UPS guy needs a signature for a package.

Paul, this was very interesting . . . Which one do you think you will get?
