Free services from Google

It wasn't long ago that Google announced free GPS service. Install a Google maps application on your Blackberry or Iphone and you instantly have a free GPS. It works so well that I stopped paying AT&T for the navigator service. I just saw the free GPS service from Google on the Android and it's even better. Wow. Driving directions, walking directions, pictures of the actual intersections and streets. It's all so good and free.

Next, I recently switched to Google Voice and found out that they are offering free SMS text messaging with the free Google Voice service. You sign up for Google Voice and get a phone number from Google. Someday you'll be able to port your mobile number to Google, but it's not ready yet. Then you can setup your Google Voice number to redirect calls to your other numbers. There is also a Blackberry application and an HTML 5 application for the Iphone since Apple hasn't let it become an official application yet. It's a little tricky setting up Google Voice since there is an option to send SMS notifications to your phone. These messages aren't free because they use your carrier. Make sense? To get free SMS you have to only use your Google Voice number and then either install the Google Voice application or have the SMS message you receive sent to your email. It's a little cumbersome, but if you are sending tons of SMS messages, it can save you another $15 per month. That's how much I pay for unlimited SMS from AT&T. I haven't converted to Google SMS yet, but I probably will soon. Here's why.

AT&T recently announced that VOIP services will be allowed to use the 3G network for sending and receiving calls. To me, this makes AT&T more like a wireless IP network than a voice carrier. I'll now be free to use Skype or whatever VOIP service I want. I'm actually looking forward to Google integrating the VOIP Gizmo5 service.

Can you imagine the day where you have one number and the service knows your presence so it can tell which phone to ring? I can. It's not far away.

Technology continues to amaze me and confuse me. I think it'd be great to have that service that knows your presence and will direct which phone to ring.

Great information, now to get it hooked up.

There are all kinds of naysayers who say that google is evil, and we should not let them further into our lives, but I like the company, and many of their ideas.

I think there is potential backlash against google, but I think it's interesting that they continue to disrupt large established businesses by offering services that people are accustom to paying for by offering an equivalent service for free. You should look at the public GPS companies to see what happened to their stock the day Google announced free GPS. Their market caps were significantly reduced.

Mr. Pages, i recently started using Google Voice and I think its awesomely insane how google can offer great products and push more and more competition into the mobile world. I have an Iphone and hate the restrictions, i want to get a google android phone but haven't seen one that I like yet that takes a phone to a complete new level. Hopefully it will blow up soon into something big because I agree, phones are a huge part of our lives and I think soon there will be something that throws everything on its head.
