Grilled Peaches With Rum Sauce
Start with Whole Peaches
I like to BBQ or grill just about anything. Peaches make an awesome summer time dessert. Here is a great recipe for grilled peaches.
Wash the peaches under cold water. We recommend leaving the skin on for grilling, but they can be peeled if that is preferred.

Halve and Pit the Peaches
Take a sharp pairing knife and cut to the center of the peach until the blade hits the pit. Continue to slice all the way around the peach. The peach halves will sometimes stick to the pit, so pry your fingers into the slice and pull the peach gently till it comes in two. The pit will stick in one side. Use a fork tong to pry out the pit.
Place the Peaches on the Grill
Over a hot grill (500 degrees) with the lid closed, put the peach halves on the grill with the flat side down and let them cook about 8 minutes. Flip them all at once and let them grill for about another 8 minutes or until they are cooked. By finishing them with the flat side facing up, they'll hold more juice.
Tips for Grilled Peaches
How can you tell if a peach is ripe enough to grill? Peaches should be firm to the grip with a little give when they're squeezed to be good for grilling.
Do peaches need to be peeled before grilling? No, it's optional. I prefer to leave the skin on the peach because the peach retains more juice while it is grilled.
What type of peach is best for grilling? Any type of peach can be used for grilling. The most important aspect is the size. A typical peach is the size of a medium fist which takes about 15 to 16 minutes to grill over high heat. At this point, the peach will be cooked all the way through the fruit. Small peaches take less time and larger ones more. Reduce the grilling time for a firmer final piece of fruit.
Should grilled peaches rest before serving? Like meat, grilled peaches will continue to cook as they rest. For dessert recipes, I recommend serving them as they're pulled from the grill. For dishes that require the fruit to cool down, reduce the grilling time by two to three minutes to let them finish cooking. When peaches rest after grilling, they will ooze juice, so be sure to put them on a pan that won't leak juice on the floor.
What do you serve with grilled peaches? Grilled peaches can be an excellent side to barbecue chicken, barbecue pork including tenderloin and baby back ribs and barbecue steak. They also go extremely well sliced in salads. However, my favorite way to eat them is as a simple dessert. For dessert, the rum sauce recipe is delicious, but they can also be sprinkled with white sugar and served hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
When are peaches in season? Peaches are typically picked in September, but in the winter months, US grocery stores import them from South America. A peach typically costs about 99 cents a pound in season, while imported peaches cost around $3 a lbs.
