The Best Checking Account List - Tired of wasting money on fees and no interest

By

Stop Wasting Money on Expensive Checking Account services

I've been wasting money each month by having a Bank of America Checking account. They charge monthly fees, pay for checks, I often have to go to another ATM and have to pay as well, and lastly, even though interest rates are very low now, I don't make any interest on my balance in my checking account where I get my entire check deposited every month. I've decided to become financially fit and have been looking at ways of saving money. Finding the best checking account is my first step.

For me, the criteria for selecting a checking account is a set of criteria.

  • First and foremost is no monthly fees regardless of the balance in the checking account.
  • Access to ATMs without having to pay fees
  • The ability to earn interest on the balance in the checking account. The higher the yield, the better.
  • Mobile deposits. I don't like going to the bank to deposit checks, so I want to be able to use a mobile app to take a picture of a check and have it deposited.
  • Free Bill Pay service. We pay almost all our bills via online bill pay. This is a critical feature.
  • Other things to consider are if the checking account provides free checks, over draft protection, Debit card with rewards.

Researching Checking Accounts

I began researching checking accounts by asking the most financially fit people I know what they use for checking and personal investing. I find that people that use Vanguard for personal investing is often a good indicator that they care about good services at a low cost and will select a high quality checking service. It turns out, almost everyone is paying too much for checking services.

Credit unions often have some very good services. For example, PenFed has some very good credit cards, low auto loans, but it doesn't stack up on checking account services. Other local banks and credit unions often fell short in one category like mobile banking options, or access to free ATMs. If there was one area I found small banks that beat my final list is in yields. There are checking accounts paying double the interest, but I felt there other fees and lack of convenience kept them from my final list.

My list of top checking accounts are all online services.

1. No ATM fees have limits and are dependent upon the network 2. Yields on checking accounts are variable and may change at various balance levels

The top online checking account is Charles Schwab

After comparing all the checking accounts and getting comfortable with doing all my checking by mail, direct deposit, and using online tools, I chose Charles Schwab. I think it's the best services for my needs because of the no fees and no minimum balance (You can open an account with $5). Also, you have to have a brokerage account with CS, but you don't have to fund it (This is what I'm doing). They also provide free checks and a free debit card. The only downside, it wasn't the highest yielding. Capital One checking is, but CO doesn't have as good as mobile banking. We often have checks to deposit and being able to snap a picture and send it in will save us time and money. CapitalOne is probably my second choice, although I think USAA is a high quality service as well. I would have probably gone with USAA if they had better yields on lower balances.

I have a Schwab Account. A friend showed me his no atm fee card last year and got me interested. I actually only signed up 3 or 4 weeks back but so far everything has worked as described.

I use an account through a supermarket chain. Checks are free, I can pay all my bills online and the only time I am charged is when I use another bank's ATM. And I even get interest.

Thats the joy of the schwab account, UW, they refund ALL atm fees - everything you listed is standard

I have heard of the Schwab account. I have my main accounts with a federal credit union and have a secondary checking account with BOA. I pay no fees, etc. because my mortgage is through BOA also. Thanks for the info, Paul. It's always good to know.

We have accounts with 2 credits unions in town. I've been with 1 for over 13 years and am happy as a lark with them. The other is my husbands savings directly deposited from his pay. We love this bank too, but neither pay interest on checking accounts.

Paul,

Are you saying that no matter which ATM machine you use, there is no charge?

I bank with Wells Fargo and pay no fees unless overdrawn. The interest rate on my saving account is dismal though!. Interesting and relevant hub.

@Gredmondson

Yes. Charles Schwab refunds the ATM fees from other banks. There are some limits in the number of withdrawals you can do each month and get refunded, but most people will be way under that amount.

Hi Paul,

It's surprising how quickly the fees add up. I have an RBC chequing account and recently found out that they would waive all my fees if I just have all my accounts with them. Since they are a good bank I don't mind doing this, and now I am saving $48 a year!

Great info Paul, I use a local bank that would fit right up there on your chart and their customer service is exceptional. Don't know about the mobile deposits but I really don't have the need for it. But for today's fast paced mobile world it seems like a good idea. Up and useful.

My whole life, I have used the services of a local bank. Every time I have thought about switching, something happens to make me stay with them. One time I met a 90 year old man in the parking lot who told me that he had his money there during the Great Depression (this was some time ago) and he did not lose a penny. Go local!

I should probably switch out of my student checking account before it's too late....

We've been using BOA for almost two decades. But I may want to take a look at CS now. For anyone out there who goes to Costco to shop, they have a savings account program with Capital One that pays much higher interest than a typical savings account.

Hey Paul - I would recommend checking out ING Direct's Electric Orange account too. No fees, largest free ATM network in the country, interest rate is as high as .9% depending on your balance (its .2% for $0-$50k), no minimum balance, no overdraft fees (it comes with an overdraft credit line), free bill pay, remote check deposit, electronic checks, paper checks, the works. It’s the best checking account I have found. .
